Our Drivers and Morocco Tour Guides
On a private tour with us, two kinds of people look after you: your driver/guide, an English-speaking local who drives you and stays with you from the first day to the last, and licensed local guides who walk you through the medinas of Fes and Marrakech and sites like Volubilis. In the Sahara, you are on our home ground in Merzouga.

Your Driver/Guide
Your driver is the person you spend the most time with, so it matters that it is one person, for the whole trip.
What your driver does
- Drives you safely on every kind of road, from motorways to mountain passes and desert tracks.
- Explains the places you drive through: the kasbahs, the valleys, the villages and the history behind them.
- Suggests stops, viewpoints and places for lunch, and stops wherever you ask.
- Plans each day around the light, the heat and your energy.
- Helps with the practical things, from changing money to buying a SIM card.
What it costs you
Nothing extra: your driver’s meals, nights away, fuel, tolls and parking are all part of the price of your tour.
Only your group
Your driver works for your party alone for the whole trip. No one else joins the car.
Licensed Local Guides
In Morocco, guiding visitors through the medinas and monuments is a licensed profession. Official guides are trained, carry a badge and know their city in depth.
Where a guide makes the difference
- Fes: the old medina of Fes el-Bali is a maze of lanes, and a guide shows you the madrasas, the tannery and the craft quarters. See our Fes guided tour.

- Volubilis and Meknes: the Roman city makes much more sense with someone who can read it for you.
- Casablanca: the Hassan II Mosque runs its own guided tours for visitors.
Official guides and unofficial ones
In the busy medinas, unofficial guides approach visitors who are on their own, and some of them lead you to the shops that pay them. A licensed guide booked in advance avoids that.

In the Desert
Our team is based in Merzouga, so the Sahara part of your trip is planned by people who live there.
Camel handlers
On your camel ride into the dunes, a camel handler walks beside you and leads the camels at a slow pace, and knows the dunes well enough to find the best place for the sunset.
At the camp
The camp team cooks your dinner and breakfast and, at night, plays traditional Berber music around the fire. We confirm the exact camp and tent category with your quote.
Sandboarding
Sandboarding on the dunes is part of every desert tour. Beginners are welcome: it is easier than it looks, and falling is soft.
Tipping Your Driver and Guides
Tips are never included in the price, and they are always optional.
If you would like to thank your driver, the usual moment is the last day of the trip. For local guides and camp staff, tip at the end of the visit or the night. Moroccan dirhams are the easiest currency for everyone; small notes help.
How much is up to you. If you are unsure, ask us before you travel and we tell you what travelers usually give.

Do your drivers speak English?
Yes. All our drivers are English-speaking driver/guides, and other languages are available on request.
Will we have the same driver for the whole trip?
Yes. The same driver meets you on the first day and stays with you until the last drop-off.
Is the driver also our tour guide?
Your driver is a driver/guide who explains the places on the way and suggests stops. Inside the medinas and at some historic sites, a licensed local guide walks with you; we arrange one on request.
Do we need a guide in every city?
No. Most travelers take a guide in Fes and Marrakech, sometimes at Volubilis, and explore the smaller towns with their driver or on their own.
Can we have a guide who speaks another language?
Yes, other languages are available on request. Tell us which one when you ask for your quote.
