Overview of This Agafay Desert Tour
The Agafay desert is a stony plateau of bare hills about 40 minutes from Marrakech, with the High Atlas on the horizon. It is not the Sahara, but it is the nearest desert landscape to the city and the best place near Marrakech to watch the sun go down. Our private Agafay desert tour leaves in the afternoon and brings you back after dark.
We keep the plan simple: the drive past the Lalla Takerkoust lake, time in the hills before sunset, a camel ride or a quad bike if you want one, and dinner at a desert camp if you want to stay into the evening. Tell us which of these you would like and we include them in your price.

Is the Agafay desert a real desert?
It is a stony desert of bare hills, not sand dunes. For the Sahara’s dunes you need at least 2 days from Marrakech.
Agafay or the Sahara?
Agafay is 40 minutes away and fits in an afternoon. The Sahara dunes at Merzouga are about 9 hours away and need 3 days; Zagora needs 2. If you have the time, the Sahara is a different experience altogether.
What is the best time for an Agafay desert tour?
Late afternoon, for the sunset. From about December to April the Atlas is often white with snow behind the hills. Summer afternoons are very hot, so we leave later.
Can we stay the night in Agafay?
Yes. There are many camps in Agafay, from simple to luxury. Tell us and we add a night at a camp that suits you.
