How We Plan a Family Trip
Morocco is easy with children when the days are short and the plan is flexible. This is how we set up a family trip.
Shorter drive days
Long drives are the hardest part for kids, so we split the long legs and stop every hour or two for a walk, a view or a snack. On the 12-day itinerary, only the day from Fes to the desert is longer than about 5 hours.
Rooms that fit
We look for riads and hotels with family or connecting rooms, and camp tents that sleep the whole family, and confirm them with your quote. Some medina riads have steep stairs and open courtyards; with small children, we choose around that.

Food and health
Moroccan food is rarely spicy-hot: tagines, couscous, grilled chicken, fresh bread and fruit suit most children. Drink bottled water, and tell us about allergies or special diets when you book.
When to Go and How Long
For most families, school holidays decide the dates. Here is what each one is like.
Spring break and fall break
The best times: warm days, cool nights, and comfortable weather in the desert.
Summer
July and August are very hot inland and in the Sahara. If summer is your only option, we keep the desert to one night, drive early in the day, and spend more time in the Atlas and on the coast at Essaouira, which stays mild.
Christmas and New Year
Sunny days and cold nights, especially in the desert. Camps have blankets, but bring warm layers for everyone.
How many days?

Is Morocco good for a family vacation?
Yes, especially with a private driver. Distances are long, so the key is a route with short drive days and a pace set around the children. The desert, the medinas and the coast all work well for kids.
What is the best age for a Morocco family tour?
There is no minimum age. With toddlers we keep drive days very short; children from about six get the most from the camel ride and the medinas.
Can children ride camels in the Sahara?
Yes. The camels walk slowly, led by a camel handler, and the ride suits most children; small children can ride with a parent. If anyone would rather not ride, most camps can also be reached by 4×4.
